MODERN ATLANTIS
a visual journey through a world of opposites
concept
Modern Atlantis is a critical view on the contemporary society, based on the fact that we live in crucial times. The concept compares and combines aspects of the modern and ancient world, both dominated by humans.
The key factor is the legend of Atlantis, a wealthy empire that the gods of Olympus sunk into the sea due to human neglect. Almost 15.000 years later we can observe a modern version of Atlantis. This would be the volcanic island of Santorini, located in the Mediterranean Sea. This island is not only directly linked to the legend, as it may have the same geographical location, but is also an accurate projection of many modern global problems concentrated in a tiny place.
A visual journey through modern Atlantis is embodied through the medium of a printed publication that reveals the contrasts between the beauty of nature, the immorality of human behaviour, and the weakened majesty of our ancient culture.
Design
The main design element that is being used throughout the whole publication as well as on the book cover, is a blue squared layer which stands for the water element. Due to its transparency, any motives that appear behind it are supposed to be partially submerged into the water, exactly as Atlantis must have been.

conteNt
As for the content, all pages communicate mainly visually, through illustrations, photographs and photo compositions.
Beginning with a compact introduction, the reader collects informations about the connection between Atlantis, Santorini and in extent the whole modern world.
Photography
All photographic material included in the publication are result of a self made documentation that came into existence after personally visiting the island Santorini. The goal was to collect photographic motives that show the island as it is, focusing on the contrast between the raw beauty of nature and the manmade industrial marks.
Bellow follow parts of two photo series that showcase the result of the documentation:
